An introduction to Cube-Art®

The origins of Cube-Art:

Gerhard Meling first conceived the idea of Cube-Art in Spain, 1989. He had bought a simple set of plastic cubes for one of his children. He replaced the images on them with some colourful ones of his own. Then he began to experiment with composite images made on nine cubes 5x5 cm arranged in a square. He discovered that the key to moving quickly and reliably from one image to the next lay in turning the cubes in a simple sequence of rows and columns.

And so Cube-Art was born.

Gerhard extended his idea into the concept of relating several sets of nine cubes to one another. Suddenly the new visual medium became multi-dimensional. Cubes could obviously be used o tell stories. All that was needed was a medium. Typically, Gerhard chose the greatest subject of all - the history of mankind.

Discubery

Discubery is the name given to Gerhard Meling´s history of the world portrayed in 324 vibrantly colourful composite images, handpainted on the six sides of 486 wooden cubes 5x5 cm. The cubes are arranged in groups of nine to display fifty-four images on each side on the six facades. Each facade made up of 486 cubes all facing the same way, covers an era of history and presents fifty-four key historical images.
The cubes are arranged in groups of nine separated by dividers and framed.

Facade I: Ancient Times -A tribute to the Antiquity
Facade II: The first Millennium - Decline of the Roman Empire
Facade III: Medieval Ages - The dark struggle
Facade IV: The Renaissance - An age of great Discovery
Facade V: Industry and Turmoil - An age of Revolution
Facade VI: Towards the year 2000 - Vision and Despair

Discubery is a journey through the history of the human race. It is a new medium for the timeless art of storyteller, in whose hands the cubes bring to life many different images simultaneously to illustrate but one story. Discubery is independent language, although language can only enhance its power and effectiveness.

Gerhard Meling made this unique piece of art in Spain, 1990 - 91.

Interactive Art

Since 1991, Meling has worked with developing Cube-Art. He painted directly on cubes, but also on canvases and many of these artworks is made to be transferred on cubes.
In the later years his paintings have got a more geometric - abstract form. The colours are clear and brilliant and almost look like stained glass.
Since -94, Meling has been engaged with getting Cube-Art on the net. (Interactive Art)
This is now in process and will soon be to find on the net.
